Quick Answer #1: No. There is a lot that goes into properly calibrating a vehicle, including very precise specifications that need to be met. When OEMs designed these specifications, they left very little room for error. That’s why following the rules provided by the OEM to calibrate a vehicle are of the utmost importance.

Quick Answer #2: Technically, you can calibrate ADAS sensor-fusion whether the alignment is within or out of specifications. However, some OEMs require an alignment knowing that without verifying the alignment, you don’t know where the vehicle is ‘pointing’ via positive/negative thrust angle and, in turn, which direction the sensors are “looking.”

Dynamic vs. static calibrations
The specific type of calibration needed – dynamic or static – is determined by the type of vehicle and specific OEM requirements. Static calibrations involve showing a known object or pattern at a prescribed distance and location to a sensor and verifying that it is seeing that object exactly as it should be. For dynamic calibrations, a car must be driven in a prescribed structure with real world signals and common vectors integrated into a learning mode.
